Uganda Cranes Captain Onyango not injured, ready for the next round

Uganda Cranes Captain Denis Masinde Onyango in not injured, confirms the national team head coach Sebastien Desabre.

The 33-year-old was stretched of in the second half of the game and replaced by Robert Odongkara as the Cranes trailed 2-0 against the Pharaohs of Egypt on Sunday evening in their third and final game of Group A.

“He is doing well. He never got injured. He was down with flu for two days prior to the match against Egypt but he is very okay now,” coach Desabre noted.

Onyango, who features for South Africa’s ABSA Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns also confirmed the development with a brief tweet that said; “see u in the next round”.

Against the run of play, the hosts found themselves 2-0 up before half time thanks to Mohamed Salah’s exquisite free-kick and Ahmed Elmohamady strike shortly before recess.

Despite the defeat, Uganda still qualified for the round of 16 after finishing second of the pool with 4 points, 5 adrift of leaders Egypt who finished with 9 points.

The Cranes will now take off a day rest before resuming their training to get ready for the knock stages of the tournament of the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations.

“Uganda Cranes Contingent in Cairo will have a day off today. Training resumes tomorrow,” Desabre added.
