Not everyone can pull it off on the first attempt but Wakiso Giants have done it. It’s been a long season but they’ve sealed their promotion to the 2019/2020 StarTimes Uganda Premier League after edging Entebbe FC in the FUFA Big League on Thursday evening.
The Purple Sharks become the first side to be promoted to the top flight from the second tier following a 2-1 victory over Entebbe at the Kyabazinga Stadium in Jinja.
Goals from Norman Ogik and Ivan Kiweewa were enough to earn maximum points for the Ibrahim Kirya-coached side.
In the end, John Wesley Kisakye’s first half headed equalizer in the 42nd minute for the visitors that canceled out Ogik’s 32nd minute lead for the home side only turned out to be a consolation as Entebbe suffered a painful defeat that saw them relegated to the third tier.
It was all square at halftime. And at the start of the second stanza, coach Kirya introduced fresh legs with Hakim Ssenkumba and Geoffrey Luutu coming on for Richard Kigozi and Abdukarim Kasule respectively.
Later on, Kiweewa restored the hosts’ lead when he capitalized on defender Felix Kaweesa’s failure to clear James Kasibante’s cross.
The victory left the Purple Sharks top of the Elgon Group with 40 points, four above Kyetume in second who beat Nebbi Central 5-1, with just a game to spare. The Giants will have to make a trip to Arua for their final game of the season in which they take on Dove All Stars.
Meanwhile, the result meant that coach James Odoch’s Entebbe FC remain second from bottom with 16 points and are officially relegated to the Regional League despite having one more game to play.
