Vipers Sports Club stung Onduparaka Football Club to return to winning ways on Tuesday evening at the St Mary’s stadium in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
The Venoms and the Caterpillars played to a virgin first half but it’s the hosts who came back stronger for the second stanza to claim their first victory after two consecutive draws against Tooro United FC and Bright Stars FC.
The game was the first for Edward Golola since his return to Kitende in the capacity of an interim head coach following the departure of Javier Martinez Espinoza that saw the appointment of Kenyan international Michael Ouma.
Geoffrey Wasswa, Dan Muzeyi Sserunkuma and center back Livingstone Mulondo were on target for the league reigning champions.
New signing Innocent Wafula made his debut for the club while team captain Taddeo Lwanga returned from injury after missing his side’s last three engagements. Tito Okello also returned to the fold after missing the trip to Mwererwe last week against Bright Stars.
Wasswa broke the deadlock in the 49th minute while goal poacher Sserunkuma doubled the lead just four minutes later with a spectacular striker from 25 yards out to extend his personal tally to seven league goals.
Defender Livingstone Mulondo hammered the last nail in the Caterpillars’ coffin when he jumped high to head home off Yayo Lutimba’s cross.
The victory implies that Vipers remain second on the table with 29 points from 13 games and 7 points adrift of leaders KCCA FC, who have played to two games more while Onduparaka FC dropped to fourth place with 24 points from 15 games.
Vipers’ two games in hand are against URA FC and Mbarara City FC.
Meanwhile, SC Villa shared the spoils with Police FC in a 2-2 draw at the StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo.
