Uganda Premier League champions Vipers Sports have this evening parted ways with their head coach Javier Martinez Espinoza.
According to a club statement published on their website, www.viperssc.co.ug, they said;
“Vipers SC has this evening terminated the services of its head coach Javier Martinez Espinoza.”
“The club management thanks the Mexican tactician for the services rendered to the club,” further read the statement.
Although the reasons for his sacking were not revealed, it’s clear that the club’s failure to advance to the group stages of the CAF Champions League at the hands of Algeria’s CS Constantine could have been the key factor here.
The Venoms shared the spoils with Tooro United FC in a goalless draw on Saturday evening at the St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende turned out to be final stroke that broke the camel’s back for Martinez, who had lost 3-0 on aggregate over two legs against Constantine in CAF Champions League playoffs. Vipers lost by 1-0 and 2-0 away and at home respectively.
Martinez assumed the mantle of the three-time league champions on August 6th 2018 when he was unveiled to the public as the new head coach at the Kitende based club, to feel the void left by Portugal’s Jorge Miguel Da Costa who had also been shown the exist despite guiding the club to a Uganda Premier League title in 2017/2018 and to the 2018 Uganda Cup final, which they lost by 1-0 to rivals KCCA Football Club.
The club has however promised to name an interim technical team that will take the club forward as they begin the quest for a new gaffer.
“Vipers SC will in the next 24 hours make major announcements on the new technical team after the restructuring aimed at helping Vipers achieve its desired objectives at both local and international level.”
Regardless of who is named in an interim capacity, reports suggest that club president and former Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) boss Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa is a secret admirer of KCCA FC lead tactician coach Mike Raymond Mutebi who has had major success since taking it’s mantle over three years ago.
Mutebi however still has a running contract with the Kasasiro Boys and recently, ex-Kampala Capital City Authority executive director madam Jennifer Musis bagged him to stay at Lugogo during her farewell moment with the team amidst rumors linking with him (Mike) with a move to Kitende.
