Cristiano Ronaldo denies rape allegations against him

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has come out and denied rape allegations against him, calling them “fake news”.

A US woman by the names of Kathryn Mayorga recently alleged that the 33-year-old Portugal captain raped her in 2009.

In an Instagram video, Ronaldo noted that; “They want to promote (themselves) by using my name. It’s normal.”

Now his lawyers say that they will sue the Germany magazine called Der Spiegel which initially reported the allegations.

According to BBC Sport, “the magazine wrote that Kathryn Mayorga had claimed Ronaldo” had forced himself on her “in a hotel room in Las Vegas”.

Ms Mayorga, 34, apparently “filed a rape report with Las Vegas police shortly after the alleged incident”.

However, in 2010, the two parties reportedly reached an agreement to settle the matters outside court in which Ronaldo was to pay $375,000 (£288,000) on condition that Mayorga was never to go public with the allegations.

Her lawyers are nonetheless threatening to declare the non-disclosure agreement void.

In the wake of these allegations, Ronaldo’s lawyer Christian Schertz said “the reporting in Spiegel is blatantly illegal” before adding that he has been instructed to seek compensation for “moral damages” over “probably one of the most serious violations of personal rights in recent years,” as quoted by BBC Sport
