Crested Cranes off to South Africa—COSAFA Women Champions

The Uganda National Women’s football team, the Crested Cranes is off to South Africa for the COSAFA Women Champions.

The team departed the Pear of Africa on Monday afternoon at around 3pm aboard South African airlines from Entebbe International Airport.

The traveling contingent consists of 20 members that will be representing Uganda at the tournament. Team head coach Faridah Bulega who recently guided the girls to second place finish at the CECAFA Women Championship in Rwanda had this to say prior to the team’s departure.

“We are going to compete but not to participate. My players will gain confidence, experience and exposure,” Faridah said as quoted by the federation’s website (

“It is a great opportunity to be invited to this great tournament. We shall not disappoint our fans,” she added.

Meanwhile, team skipper Tracy Jones Akiror said that they are "going to fight for good results" at the competition.

“We are well motivated. We are going to fight for good results. We urge all Ugandans to be behind us. Give us the support. We will not disappoint you.”

The Crest Cranes are seeded in group C with Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Uganda will open their campaign on Wednesday 12th September when they take on King Mswati's ladies of Swaziland followed by Namibia on Saturday 15th and later Zimbabwe on Monday 17th in the two weeks long tournament.
