Arua based side Onduparaka Football Club made the long trip to Kampala and stunned Sports Club Villa in 1-0 victory on Matchday 2 of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL).
At Mandela National Stadium Namboole, Rashid Toha led by example as he scored the earliest goal of the season. The Caterpillars’ captain scored a beauty from a direct free kick just a few yards out of the area when he curled the ball in the top corner to be Brian Bwete in the Jogoos’ goal.
The free kick followed a foul on Amis Muwonge. The visitors almost doubled their lead but Viane Sekajugo’s effort was ruled out for an offside in the 17th minute.
Although the hosts looked the better side, they failed to convert their chances and at many times were denied by their former goalkeeper Nicholas Ssebwato.
Elsewhere, at Muteesa II stadium in Wankulukuku, visiting side Bright Star FC came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against league debutants Nyamityobora FC.
Two first half goals from Patrick Gonahassa in the 5th minute and Ibrahim Dada in the 35th minute gave the home side a 2-0 lead by halftime.
Three minutes into the second half, team skipper Nelson Senkatuka pulled one back for Fred Kajoba’s side from the penalty spot to start what eventually turned out to be a remarkable comeback.
Nyamityobora managed to hang onto their 2-1 lead but succumbed to pressure from the visitors with just five minutes away from full time and conceded two goals in two minutes. Alfred Onek and substitute Brian Kayanja were on the scoresheet in the 86th and 87th minutes respectively as the Yosino-sponsored side won to reclaim their top spot at the Premier League table with maximum point from two games.
League defending champions Vipers SC and Onduparaka FC are the two sides to have won their two opening fixture of the new season. Vipers won 2-1 away to Maroons FC on Tuesday evening at the Luzira Prisons grounds.
