FC Barcelona have appointed Ernesto Valverde as their new manager ahead of next season, replacing a departed Luis Enrique.
The former Catalans forward announced just last week that he was leaving Athletic Bilbao after four years in charge of the Spanish side.
Valverde comes in to feel the void left by Luis Enrique, who announced in March that he was to leave the club at the end of the season. Enrique guided Barcelona to nine titles in three seasons including a treble in his debut campaign, a domestic double last season and the Copa del Rey this year.
Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu praised the 53-year-old's "ability, judgement, knowledge and experience", before adding that; "he promotes young players and he plays the Barca way."
Valverde featured for Barc between 1988 and 1990. He started his coaching career at Bilbao's B side in 2002 before being promoted to lead the first team as head coach in the following season.
He also had stints at Espanyol, Olympiacos, Villarreal and Valencia before returning to Athletic Bilbao in 2013.
