FC Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi has been banned for insulting an assistant referee during their 1-0 victory over Chile on Thursday.
The 29-year-old and five-time FIFA Ballon d’Or winner who scored the only goal of the game was penalised for a foul before shouting at the assistant referee.
The left footed Argentine star has been slapped with a £8,100 fine and will miss his country’s next four competitive games. The ban came just hours before their kick off with Bolivia.
The 2014 World Cup losing finalists are currently third in South American qualifying, with the top four teams set to advance to the finals of next year in Russia. They have just five games left to play.
