US Open: Serena Williams thrashes Anastasija Sevastova in semi-final clash

It took an hour and six minutes for Serena Williams to thrash Anastasija Sevastova 6-3 6-0 in a semi-final clash at the US Open at Flushing Meadows, New York.

The victory gives the former World number one and US 17th seed another shot at winning her 24th Grand Slam to equal Margaret Court’s record and her first since giving birth to her daughter Olympia in September last year.

The American 36-year-old will now face off with Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the finals on Saturday.

Naomi, 20, beat America’s Madison Keys 6-2 6-4 in New York to earn her spot in the finals of the 2018 US Open and become the first Japanese woman to reach a Grand Slam final.

"It is really incredible. A year ago I was literally fighting for my life at the hospital after having the baby," Williams said after her victory.

"Every day I step out on this court I am so grateful to have an opportunity to play this sport. So no matter what happens in any match, I already feel like I have already won."

Heading into the finals, Serena will be playing her 31st Grand Slam final and her 9th at the US Open after missing last year’s edition. She will be making her first appearance in the finals of the prestigious tournament since 2014 when she beat Caroline Woziacki.
