What had been hoped to be a very competitive tie at the quarterfinals of the 2018 Rolland Garros turned out to be a one-sided encounter as Garbine Muguruza eased past Russia’s Maria Sharapova.
The Spanish number three and Wimbledon reigning champion thumped Sharapova by 6-2 6-1 in just 70 minutes to reach the semifinals of the French Open.
"I was up against a great player so I had to make sure I brought my best tennis. I wasn't thinking so much about the result. I was just thinking about not dropping my level, not giving her a single point, and I guess that helped my performance," Muguruza remarked after her victory.
Muguruza, a 2016 winner in Paris will now faceoff with World’s number one, Simona Halep in the last four of the tournament. Halep edged German’s Angelique Kerber by 6-7 (2-7) 6-3 6-2 to book her spot in the semifinals.
