Three Ugandan boxers go awol in Germany

Three Ugandan boxers who recently went to Germany for the high profile AIBA World Championships in Hamburg have gone awol and haven’t returned back to the Pearl of Africa.

According to the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) mouthpiece, David Kavuma, the three athletes include supper heavy weight boxer David Ayiti, bantam weight star Geoffrey Kakeeto and African welterweight champion Muzamiru Kakande.

"The boxers told me that it was an opportunity for them to better their lives by staying back in Germany and sign contracts for a club in the National League. I could not stop them because they were determined to stay," Kavuma is quoted by a local newspaper, The Observer.

While in Hamburg, Germany Kakeeto lost to Nicaragua’s Angel Jarquin and Kakande was beaten by USA Captain Quinton Randall while Ayiti was not included in the draws for reasons yet to be known.

However, National Council of Sports (NCS) insist that the boxers must return to the country.
