Manchester United have sacked manager Jose Mourinho after two and a half years in charge of the club.
“Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement.
“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future,” the statement further stated.
“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager.”
The 55-year-old Portuguese guided the club to a Community Shield, League Cup and the Europa League in his first campaign at Old Trafford.
His sacking comes in the aftermath of a 3-1 loss to the Red Devil’s bitter rivals of Liverpool on Sunday, leaving them sixth on the Premier League table and 19 points behind leaders.
Mourinho had however signed a new contract in January this year that was due to expire in 2020.
